Miss Kitty

We took Gracie to the vet today because she has obviously lost weight. Of course she's a pretty hefty cat, but it's always a good idea to let a vet check a cat out if she's losing weight for no reason.

I loved the vet! She was great. Grace looks healthy, so they did some blood work and that came back looking good too - no thyroid issues, no diabetes, her white cell count is excellent - but she's lost somewhere between 7 to 10 pounds. I don't remember exactly how much she weighed last time we took her to the vet, but I might call and try to find out. She hasn't been in a few years, though, and they might not still have her record.

Her teeth also looked good, so it's not that. The only other thing we could think of is that she may be depressed. She's taken it pretty hard since Violet has arrived and we just don't have the time to spend with her like we used to. So we are going to take her back in two weeks to see if she's lost more weight. Rapid weight loss in cats is a bad thing - their livers can't handle it and they can die. So we're going to check that out in two weeks and she may get an x-ray to look for other causes. If the x-ray is ok, I'm not sure where we'll go from there. She said she could give her something to stimulate her appetite, but since she's overweight still, she doesn't really need to gain more weight. And if she is depressed, that won't really help the real problem.

In the meantime, Ross and I are going to try to spend some more time with the girl and we've started letting her go out on the balcony, which I haven't let her do in several years. She's just not herself, kind of lethargic. Poor, sweet little baby kitty! She'll be 12 in May.
